Cantonese /-i-/ is usually like Putonghua [i] in [ji qi xi], which is like the English ‘ee’ in ‘gee’ or ‘ea’ in ‘sea’. However, the Cantonese vowel in /-ing/ is more open than Putonghua, just like the English ‘ing’ in ‘sing’. Likewise, the vowel in /-ik/ is like the English ‘ick’ in ‘sick’.
