2.6 The /-o-/ Finals of Cantonese

There are 7 finals that have /-o-/:

o

While Cantonese /-o-/ is usually more open than Putonghua , it is the same sound as ‘o’ in ‘gone’. That said, the Cantonese final /-ou/ is the one exception: it is pronounced exactly like Putonghua .
For example:

go1 goi1 gou1
listen

竿
gon1 gong1
listen

got3 gok3
listen

Since none of /-o -oi -on -ong -ot -ok/ is found in Putonghua, beginners often find this set of finals hard to grasp. For more, see ‘Mastery of Cantonese Articulation – Mastery of the /-o-/ Vowel’.
